Synthesis (synthesis.cool) is a free app that explains research papers in plain language. It is run by an independent developer in Bangladesh. You can read everything without an account, and the app collects as little as it can. This page says exactly what it keeps.
The short version
- No account is needed to read, listen or ask.
- There are no ads, no advertising cookies and no third-party analytics.
- Usage is recorded under a random id made in your browser, not under your name or account.
- If you sign in with Google, you can delete your account and its data at any time.
If you sign in with Google
Signing in is optional. It exists so your saved papers follow you to another device. When you sign in, Synthesis stores your name, email address and profile picture link from your Google account, the sign-in tokens Google issues, a record of each signed-in session, and the papers you save.
Anonymous usage
The app records how it is used: for example a session starting, a paper being opened, saved, skipped or shared, and a change of reading level or language. These records are stored under a random id created in your browser. They are not linked to your name, email or account, and they are used to improve the app and to evaluate it as a research project.
Asking about a paper
A question you ask is sent, together with the paper's abstract, to OpenRouter, which passes it to the AI model that writes the answer. Synthesis does not save your questions. To enforce the daily limit it keeps a one-way, salted fingerprint of your internet address and the date, so the address itself is never stored. What OpenRouter and the model provider do with a question is covered by their own policies.
The reading study
If you take part in the reading study, it asks for your name, student id, department and batch, and records which explanation you preferred for each paper. You are told this on the study's first screen before you agree to take part. The answers are used to evaluate the project, and the results page that lists participants is protected by a password.
On your device only
Your chosen fields, reading level, language, theme, reading history and a cache of recent cards are kept in your browser and are not sent to Synthesis. So is the random id used for anonymous usage. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of it.
Cookies
The only cookies are the ones the sign-in system needs: one that keeps you signed in, and short-lived ones that protect the sign-in itself. Without signing in, no cookies are set.
Who processes the data
These services run parts of Synthesis and handle data on its behalf:
- Vercel hosts the app and keeps standard request logs, such as internet address and browser type.
- Supabase hosts the database.
- Cloudflare runs the domain and stores the audio, pictures and nightly database backups.
- Google provides sign-in.
- OpenRouter and the AI model it routes to answer questions about papers.
- GitHub runs the nightly backup job.
Some of them process data outside Bangladesh.
How long it is kept
Account data is kept until you delete your account. When you do, it is removed from the database straight away and from the nightly backups within 30 days, when the last backup that holds it is deleted. Anonymous usage records are kept for analysis and are not linked to you.
Deleting your data
- Signed in: open the menu and choose Delete account. It deletes your account, saved papers, Google sign-in link and sessions, and clears this device.
- Google will still list Synthesis among the apps connected to your account until you remove it at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
- Not signed in: clear this site's data in your browser.
- Anything else, including a request to see or delete your data: email [email protected].
Changes
If what the app collects changes, this page changes first, with a new date at the top. The terms of use cover the rest of how the app may be used.
